Positive Psychology has significantly impacted the field of psychology in the past thirty years. Industrial Organizational Psychology, or I/O, was recently recognized as a STEM field, and those who pursue it need an understanding of AI and Machine Learning. There has been much discussion of using AI on college campuses and its future in academia and business.
However, there is an exciting intersection between Positive Psychology, I/O Psych, and AI. Positive psychology teaches us about hope, optimism, efficacy, and resilience. In the business field, practitioners build these qualities into organizations. AI is no different. Implicit bias, confirmation bias, and hindsight bias can all be built into algorithms and sometimes without the creator’s intent. These biases can affect selection, promotion, assessment, and performance appraisal.
Instead of focusing on the deficiencies of models, we can create models and algorithms that promote the qualities of positive psychology and those that focus on strength.
